10 Kyoto Temples with Stunning Night Illumination Events (2026 Guide)

 Kyoto’s temples are beautiful at any time of day, but for all but the monks, most are closed to the public after about five in the evening. But during special, limited-time events during some of Kyoto’s most resplendent seasons, visitors are allowed in after dark to see the temples at night in a whole new light. In the darkness, lights are arranged to shine artfully on the gardens and historic temple buildings to create some of Kyoto’s most memorable nighttime scenery.

 Typically, these events take place during the two most popular seasons for visiting Kyoto: cherry blossom season in spring and autumn foliage season, though the latter tends to see a few more events across the city. If you’re planning a Kyoto trip around either season, these 10 Kyoto temples are worth a special visit at night.

1. Kodai-ji Temple

Kodai-ji Temple is well-known for its nighttime illuminations in both spring and fall. The zen temple is locally in downtown Kyoto’s atmospheric Higashiyama district, so it’s also easily reachable after sightseeing elsewhere or dining out. The temple grounds look small from outside the gate, but Kodai-ji is known for its architecture and beautiful gardens, which can put on a dramatic seasonal display after sunset.

Dates for 2026 have not yet been announced, but Kodai-ji Temple typically hosts a nighttime special viewing during cherry blossom season. This usually includes illuminating its famous weeping cherry tree in the dry rock garden, and projection mapping of moving light displays onto the temple buildings.

2. Eikando Zenrin-ji Temple

Eikando Zenrin-ji Temple is easily one of Kyoto’s most famous autumn foliage destinations, so if autumn leaves are what you’re looking for in particular, you’ll probably want to make a special stop here. The temple has beautiful maple trees across its grounds, but be aware that they draw plenty of crowds, too, so make your plans in advance!

Kiyomizu-dera is one of Kyoto’s most recognizable temples, and its special nighttime viewing allows visitors to see the famous temple and surrounding cityscape in dramatic nighttime lighting. The temple holds nighttime events in spring, summer, and autumn.

4. To-ji Temple

To-ji provides a particularly striking combination of illuminated architecture and seasonal scenery. The temple’s five-story pagoda is one of the most recognizable landmarks in southern Kyoto, and the surrounding gardens and trees provide a dramatic setting for nighttime events with the mirror-like surface of the temple’s waterways.

During cherry blossom season, To-ji holds a night cherry blossom illumination and nighttime special viewing. Around 200 cherry trees bloom across the temple grounds, including its famous weeping fuji-zakura, which makes for some especially beautiful springtime scenery.

To-ji’s autumn nighttime event is equally atmospheric. The 2026 temple grounds illumination and nighttime special viewing runs from October 31 through December 13. Around 200 maple trees are illuminated, while the five-story pagoda and the foliage are reflected in the pond, creating one of the event’s signature views.

5. Chion-in Temple

Chion-in Temple has a slightly grander scale of nighttime illumination, with its impressive sanmon gate and broader grounds.

6. Daigo-ji Temple

Daigo-ji Temple has a long association with hanami (cherry blossom viewing), dating back to the famous cherry blossom viewing party held here by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1598. In fact, though, the vast grounds and temple layout, extending up the side of the mountain, make it a great spot to catch some excellent scenery in any season.

In 2026, Daigo-ji held its first nighttime cherry blossom illumination with projection mapping across its five-story pagoda and other buildings. While it’s not yet clear if there will be another similar event next year, you may want to be on the lookout!

Dates and prices for upcoming autumn illuminations at Daigo-ji Temple have not yet been announced, but these are usually posted on the temple website.

7. Shoren-in Temple

Shoren-in Temple is another Higashiyama district temple, and a prestigious monzeki temple with ties to Japan’s Imperial Family. Its beautiful strolling garden and bamboo grove makes it a wonderful setting for light-up events, which feature artistic displays across the grounds. In 2026, the temple hosted a summer event with lantern displays and beautiful lotus-shaped lights. 8. Kitano Tenmangu Shrine

Although it’s a shrine rather than a temple, Kitano Tenmangu deserves a place on your list of Kyoto illumination events because it’s host to some big seasonal nighttime events in both spring and autumn. This shrine is known more for its plum blossoms than its cherries, but in spring or fall, the nighttime illuminations here center on openings of its historic maple garden, from sunset until around 8 p.m.

9. Tofuku-ji Temple/Tentoku-in Temple

Tofuku-ji Temple is one of Kyoto’s most famous destinations for autumn foliage, but Tofuku-ji itself is usually only open for daytime foliage viewing across its spectacular maple-filled grounds. While Tofuku-ji itself does not hold a nighttime illumination in 2026, you can continue your autumn sightseeing into the evening at Tentoku-in, one of Tofuku-ji’s subtemples. Tentoku-in Temple is known for its moss-covered garden, where autumn maple leaves create a striking contrast with the vibrant green of the moss.

10. Hogon-in Temple

Hogon-in Temple is located in Arashiyama and offers a convenient way to continue exploring the area after the daytime crowds begin to thin. Hogon-in is known for its Shishiku Garden, a strolling garden designed around views of the surrounding Arashiyama mountains. During the autumn illumination, maple trees, moss, rocks, and garden pathways take on a very different appearance under the evening lights.

What You Should Know Before Going to a Kyoto Temple Illumination

Because temple illuminations are seasonal events, their dates and opening hours can change from year to year. You can often find lists of the nighttime openings and events on sites like the Kyoto City Tourism Association Website, Kyoto Travel, and many temples will also post information about their upcoming events on their websites in English.

If you are visiting Kyoto for an autumn leaves illumination in mid-late November to December, keep in mind that the busiest events can attract large crowds, particularly on weekends and around the peak of the foliage season. You’ll want to arrive early, buy tickets early if they’re sold separately, and be prepared to line up.

Spring events are similarly dependent on the timing of the cherry blossoms. The 2026 events generally took place from mid-March through mid-April, but the ideal timing can vary from year to year depending on weather and flowering conditions. Since these are more variable, you’ll want to check both the event schedule and current blossom forecasts in advance.

Finally, remember that Kyoto evenings can be chilly during the spring and especially autumn illumination seasons, so be sure to dress in layers so you can take your time enjoying the scenery.
